Whether you’re moving to your first apartment or dream house, there are a few things you can do to make your move go a little more smoothly. Follow these tips for an organized move and a beautiful new space.
Tip 1: Purge unwanted items first
While it can be tempting to pack everything and sort it all out later, if you start early and spend the time to purge your unwanted items before you start packing, packing will be much easier and smoother. Less items means less money spent on packing materials and if you are using a professional moving company it can lighten your moving costs as well. Donate unwanted items in good condition and recycle what you can, keeping an eye out for community recycle days to purge difficult items such as paint, chemicals (which should never be moved in a moving truck) and electronics. Also, do not be tempted to purchase items for your new home before you have moved. There will be plenty of time for shopping after you are moved in and you will be able to bring those items directly to your new space.
Tip 2: Label boxes by where you want them to go
It makes sense, of course, to label your moving boxes with the room the item came from, however, when you move, items do not always end up in the same room. Make things easier for yourself, your helpers or your moving company by labeling your boxes with the room that the item will go to in your new home. This will save you a lot of work carting boxes from room to room as you are unpacking.
Tip 3: Use the right box for the job
When packing, be sure to use the right box for the item you are packing. Heavy items such as books should be packed in small boxes, breakables such as dishes and lamps should be packed in larger boxes with plenty of room for packing material around them. Make sure your moving boxes are sturdy and in good shape to prevent accidents during the move. Remember, if the box is too heavy for you to lift, it will also be difficult for anyone helping you to move it!
Tip 4: Try re-useable packing materials
Some re-useable items such as totes are great to use for packing. Pack items that are going to be stored in your garage or attic at your new home in re-useable plastic totes, such as SAMLA boxes with lids. That way these items will already organized, labeled and easy to stack keeping your storage spaces neat. The FRAKTA storage bag is great for packing hanging clothes—simply slip your clothes on hangers in and zip it up, leaving the hanger hooks out at the top for easy carrying. You can leave your seasonal clothes in the bags so they will stay clean and organized until you are ready for them.
Tip 5: Organize your new space
